Henk Waal, van der

studied philosophy at the University of Amsterdam and at the Sorbonne. He has translated work by Julia Kristeva, Paul Auster and Edmond Jabès. He has also written essays about such writers as Faverey, Paul Celan and Maurice Blanchot. In 1996, he was awarded the C. Buddingh’-prize for new Dutch poetry for his debut De windsels van de sfinx (The Sphinx’s Swathing Bands). Since then, he has published Schuldsanering (Guilt Clearance, 2000) and De aantochtster (Woman Approaching, 2003), followed in 2007 by Vreemdgang (Unfaithfulness).
