Miriam Van hee
is a poet and Slavist. She made her debut in 1978 with Het karige maal (The Scanty Meal). She was awarded the Jan Campertprijs for her collection Winterhard (Winter-Hardy), and for Achter de bergen (Behind the Mountains, 1998) she received the Driejaarlijkse Prijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap. Melancholy and uprootedness play an important part in her poetry. Behind the apparently simple, almost whispering quality of her poetry lies a great longing for security and harmony.
